Kris Srikkanth found himself transported back to the 1983 World Cup final after seeing Axar Patel’s fielding effort in the India vs. England in Mumbai on Thursday 5th March. Axar’s catch to release Harry Brook and the one that took Kapil Dev to dismiss Vivian Richards in the 83 final.

Axar was sensational on the field taking two catches and then also played a major role in the release of Will Jacks. For Brook’s catch, the Indian vice-captain covered nearly 24 meters on a backward run before diving to seal the catch and send the England skipper back to the pavilion.
On his YouTube channel, Srikkanth pointed out how Axar kept his eye on the ball and made sure it never got away from him.
“That’s a catch on another level. That too on Bumrah’s first ball. Brook hit it somewhere and the ball went on. He ran for almost 20 yards, diving and just watching the ball the whole time. He didn’t let it go. If you lose sight of it, then it’s even more difficult to bounce back. Don’t forget that. It’s not very, very easy.”
“That reminded me of how Kapil Dev took that catch to dismiss Viv Richards. That’s where Axar dived and got it. It was a great catch. That catch by Axar – it was a great catch,” Srikkanth said.
‘BUDE JACKS CATCH THE TURNING POINT’
While the catch by Brook was great, probably Axar’s best moment was when he helped Shivam Dube complete the catch to dismiss Will Jacks. The England all-rounder batted on 35 and had a 77-run stand with Jacob Bethell that threatened to take the game away from India.
Srikkanth felt that the dismissal was the turning point of the game as Jacks would end up winning for England.
“The turning point of the game was Will Jacks’ catch. The timing of Will Jacks getting out and the catch that was caught – what a catch. The way he caught it, the ball was almost for a six. We thought it was going for a six.”
“Arshdeep bowled it over quite wide, wide outside off stump. That ball was hit and he ran and caught it there and brought it back. Just look at that moment. That alone saved six runs. If Will Jacks had stayed, he would have finished the match. As long as Will Jacks was there, the match was actually in England’s hands,” Srikkanth said.
In addition to his efforts in the field, Axar also got the wicket of Tom Banton during a key point of the running chase.
