Awareness programs organized in Nellore on the occasion of World Cancer Day

The hospital and other organizations conducted several awareness programs on the occasion of World Cancer Day at SPSR Nellore district on Wednesday.

District Collector Himanshu Shukla attended the silver jubilee celebrations of the Indian Red Cross Society (IRCS) Cancer Hospital here. Talking about the 25-year journey of the hospital, he said that its progress cannot be attributed to any individual but is the result of the collective efforts and contributions of many people. He appreciated the commitment of IRCS and all stakeholders who have supported the growth of the hospital over the years.

Mr. Shukla also released a silver jubilee souvenir of the cancer hospital on the occasion. Patrons and donors who have supported the hospital since 2001 were recognized during the celebration in the presence of the collector.

Meanwhile, Narayana Medical College and Hospital in Nellore organized an awareness rally from the Gandhi statue to the RTC bus stand to create awareness about cancer prevention and early detection.

Addressing the gathering as chief guest, District Medical Officer and Health Officer Dr. Sujatha praised the hospital for starting to educate the public about cancer awareness. She said the government is also actively conducting cancer screening programs for the public.

Later, another Medical Superintendent of Narayana Hospital, Dr. Harish Ravulapalli, spoke about the importance of early screening in reducing cancer-related mortality and complications. He pointed out that India ranks third in the number of cancer cases globally, with nearly 1.5 million new cases reported every year.

Narayana Medical College and Hospital also organized a cancer awareness program and announced a free cancer screening package worth ₹5,000 for the public till 4 March.

Medical oncologist Dr. N. Srividya advised women over 20 to be screened once every three years, women over 40 once every two years and women over 50 annually through mammography and Pap Smear tests.

On the other hand, the city-owned company SEIL Energy India Limited organized a cancer awareness session at Kodur Beach as part of its CSR commitment for community health and well-being. The session was conducted in collaboration with Homi Bhabha Cancer Hospital and Research Centre.

CEO Janmejaya Mahapatra said, “At SEIL Energy, we believe awareness is the first step to saving lives. We are committed to continuing our efforts to spread cancer awareness and screening initiatives, especially in the communities where we operate. Together, we can reduce the burden of cancer and build healthier communities.”
