Cancer cases are increasing significantly both in the country and the state, but with awareness and proper preventive measures, up to 85% of them can be prevented, Association of Radiation Oncologists of India president DS Raju Naidu told AP.
Participating in a program organized by Praja Arogya Vedika on the occasion of World Cancer Day in Vijayawada on Wednesday (February 4), Dr. Raju Naidu emphasized the importance of regular physical exercise, eating nutritious food, adequate sleep and avoiding mental stress in cancer prevention.
He pointed out that breast cancer and cervical cancer are more common in women. Cancers caused by human papillomavirus (HPV) are largely preventable through personal hygiene and vaccination. In men, oral cancer and lung cancer are mainly caused by tobacco use, and quitting smoking and tobacco consumption can help prevent these cancers, he added.
Everyone should undergo regular screening to detect cancer at an early stage, he said, urging people to read the book Cancer – Early Detection Methods – Prevention, which was released on Wednesday. The book, jointly written by renowned oncologist D. Raghunatha Rao, D. Leela and MV Ramanaiah, contains valuable information, he said.
Praja Arogya Vedika district general secretary G. Vijay Prakash said the organization was working on issues such as Konduru kidney disease, thalassemia, sickle cell disease and pollution issues in Ibrahimpatnam and also conducted awareness programs and medical camps on mental health issues related to cancer, heart disease and women’s and children’s health.
