Strong rain and squalls winds that have attracted Alappuzhu over the past few days, flooded several low -laid areas and caused extensive damage. In the district, tree scores, damaging houses and power lines and disturbance of operation were eroacked.
The district administration opened six embossed camps – three in Chengannur Taluk and one in Kuttanad, Karthikappaly and Cherthala Taluks. On Saturday evening 73 people from 20 families lived in the camps.
Increasing the flow of flood waters from the eastern side led to floods in the areas of Upper Kuttanad and Kuttanad. Officials said there was no panic situation and carefully monitored the water level in the rivers.
The irrigation department opened the Thotappally spillway closures to ensure the smooth flow of flood waters from Kuttanad and the upper kuttanad into the sea.
