The bid procedure was invited to the construction of a 14.2 km long four -lane elevated corridor from Thiruvanmiyur to Uthandi on East Coast Road (ECR). Offers for the 2,100 GBP-CRORE project were floated by the State Authority for the Tamil Nadu motorway office. Finance Minister Thanging Thennaras announced the project during the budget meeting for 2025-26 in the Assembly in March this year.
According to official sources, the corridor would take off at West Avenue, just before the start of the ECR, turn right and run to Uthandi with ramps for input/climb to several points. The width of the structure, which was built along the median, would be 17.25 meters and would have a vertical will of 5.5 meters, sufficient for heavy vehicles to go under.
The work would be carried out on the hybrid model of the annuity (HAM) – a mixture of engineering, public procurement and construction (EPC) and building, operation, transmission (shoes). Although the soil obtained to extend the ECR to six stripes would be used for this structure, more land would be required for ramps.
According to the motorway engineer in retirement, the corridor was designed to allow two-way operating-warehones to Mamallapuram and Puduchherry did not have to wait for signals in Kotivakkam, Palavakkam and Neelankai; And motorists heading inside the city from ECR does not have to wait for local traffic, but instead take a raised corridor. This would also help reduce the overload of this section, which witnessed around 70,000 vehicles a day, bringing relief to slowly moving vehicles commuting from the connecting streets. The device is likely to take about four years to complete.
