Australian Badminton Open: PV Sindhu storms into 2nd round, Tanvi Sharma upsets 5th seed
Two-time Olympic medalist PV Sindhu advanced to the second round of the women’s singles at the BWF Super 500 in Sydney. The world number 10 took just 32 minutes to beat Peru’s Ines Castillo 21-13, 21-11 on Olympic Boulevard.
Sindhu will next face India’s Isharani Baruah, who defeated China’s Han Qianxi 22-20, 10-21, 21-14 in her opening match. It will be the first meeting between the two Indian players on the BWF tour.
The bigger headline for India came from teenage sensation Tanvi Sharma. Seventeen-year-old world number 36 Chiu Pin-Chian of Taipei, seeded fifth in the tournament, stunned 21-12, 22-20 to advance to the last 16.
Tanvi, who won silver at the BWF World Junior Championships last year, has been looking for consistency this season after only managing to get past the first round twice in her previous eight tournaments. Her victory over the World XI marks one of the best results of her career to date.
In the second round, Tanvi will face another Indian, Malvika Bansoda, who rallied from the match to beat Thailand’s Tonrug Saeheng 15-21, 21-7, 21-13.
India’s men’s singles campaign ended on the opening day. Kiran George lost to Malaysia’s Justin Hoh 21-19, 14-21, 21-15, Saneeth Dayanand went down to China’s Chu Zhe’an and Tharun Mannepalli was defeated by Lin Chun-yi of Chinese Taipei 18-21, 21-13, 2 chases lasting 23 minutes.
Tanya Hemanth and Aakarshi Kashyap were also scheduled to perform later in the day.
