Australia have named young spinner Tanveer Sangha as a replacement for senior bowler Adam Zampa in the upcoming ODI series against India. The decision comes as Zampa’s wife Harriet is expecting their second child. The leg-spinner, who played in Perth, Adelaide and Sydney during the recent home series, will miss the India tour to be with his family.
Zampa remains one of Australia’s most successful limited-overs bowlers and leads the wicket-taking charts in men’s T20Is. He was particularly impressive in Adelaide, where his man-of-the-match performance highlighted his consistency and control.
Sangha, aged 23, is considered one of Australia’s brightest spin prospects. Representing Sydney Thunder in the Big Bash League, he has already made his mark at international level with seven T20I appearances, although his last appearance will be in 2023. His debut was a memorable one – a four-wicket haul in just 31 runs against South Africa, which immediately highlighted his potential.
Born to Indian parents in Sydney’s south-western suburbs, Sangha initially started out as a fast bowler before switching to leg-spinner during his early teens. His rise through the New South Wales and Australian youth systems was rapid due to his natural control and ability to turn the ball sharply.
The 2023 Australian tour provided Sangha with invaluable experience as he made his ODI and T20I debuts and also served as a touring reserve during the 2023 ODI World Cup winning campaign.
Australia’s squad for India T20Is includes: Mitchell Marsh (c), Sean Abbott (Games 1–3), Xavier Bartlett, Mahli Beardman (Games 3–5), Tim David, Ben Dwarshuis (Games 4–5), Nathan Ellis, Josh Hazlewood (Games 1–2), Jogames Inglenn Maxwell (Games 1–2), Jogames Inglenn Maxwell (Games 1–2). Matthew Kuhnemann, Mitchell Owen, Josh Philippe (wk), Matthew Short, Marcus Stoinis and Tanveer Sangha.
