Auqib Nabi endures India's nightmare debut; concedes most runs, records worst economy

Auqib Nabi made his much-anticipated India debut in the second ODI against West Indies in Guwahati on Wednesday, but things did not go to plan as the Caribbean batsmen dismantled the right-arm paceman from Jammu and Kashmir.Nabi conceded 84 runs in 8.5 overs and was hit with nine fours and one six. His 84 runs are the most by an Indian bowler on ODI debut, surpassing Karsan Ghavri’s 83 runs in 11 matches against England at Lord’s in 1975.Nabi’s economy rate of 9.51 is also the worst by an Indian bowler on ODI debut among those who have bowled at least 30 balls, Cricbuzz reported.However, Nabi was not the only Indian bowler under pressure as the West Indies batsmen took complete control. After being sent in to bat, Campbell set the tone with a 65-ball run as West Indies exposed India’s inexperienced attack. The opener ended up scoring 101 off 68 balls, with nine fours and five sixes.A self-confessed admirer of Chris Gayle, Campbell brought the same attacking approach to his innings as he faced the Indian bowlers from the start.Hope and Jangoo then kept the West Indies in check in the middle and later stages of the innings, keeping the score around eight runs to one.Hope played both the role of anchor and aggressor. He reached his second ODI century in just 69 balls and finished with 114 off 83 balls, including 13 fours and three sixes.It was the first time West Indies had scored three hundreds in ODIs in three centuries. Their total of 405/7 also surpassed their previous best of 389 against England in 2019.In the absence of Jasprit Bumrah, who is on Asian Games duty, and Mohammed Siraj, who continues to sit out, India are giving younger bowlers an opportunity as they look for options ahead of the 2027 FIFA World Cup in South Africa.However, the pace attack raised more questions than it answered.Nabi, who became the third cricketer from the Valley to represent India, endured a tough outing conceding 84 runs in his 8.5 overs.
