Chief Minister VD Satheesan alleged that “some people with ulterior motives” had tried to create enmity between communities in Kerala in the last five years.

He was speaking after presenting the Indian Muslim League (IUML) leader Syed Abdurrahman Bafaqi Thangal Memorial Award to former minister MK Muneer on Tuesday (September 1, 2026).

Mr. Satheesan also alleged that several people claiming “secular credentials” supported the attempt to create a rift among these communities as well. “I am not taking any names… But I can say that Panakkad Syed Sadiqali Shihab Thangal, IUML state president, was among those who resisted the move. UDF’s spectacular victory in the assembly elections was a result of this resistance,” the chief minister said. Mr. Satheesan made these remarks while recalling the contribution of Bafaqi Thangal in maintaining harmony among different communities. Industries Minister PK Kunhalikutty, Mr. Thangal and other IUML leaders were present at the function organized by the Koyilandy Assembly constituency unit of the Dubai Kerala Muslim Cultural Centre.

Earlier, the Chief Minister presented the award instituted in memory of industrialist and businessman PV Sami to MP Ahammed of Malabar Group. Mr. Satheesan said there was no need to see entrepreneurs as enemies. He claimed that a large number of people among them are genuine tax payers and contribute to the development of the state. However, those involved in dubious deals will face strict action, Mr. Satheesan said. There were many things in common between politicians and businessmen, such as a long-term vision, a focus on teamwork and a keen observation of the market and society, he added.
