A woman from Visakhapatnam was arrested along with four others for allegedly trying to sell her seven-day-old baby boy to a childless couple for ₹5 lakh through middlemen in Karimnagar.
According to police, a woman identified as Sai Sri (23) gave birth to a baby boy at a hospital in Hyderabad on November 14. Taking advantage of Sai Sri’s “strained relationship” with her husband, her friends Abinav and Heena in Hyderabad allegedly convinced her to sell her child to a troubled couple citing her “financial difficulties”.
They allegedly struck a deal to sell the child for ₹5,000 through their associates Pallavi and Bhavani, both ‘middlemen’, and reached Karimnagar on 20 November.
There was an argument between brokers and a childless couple over the payment of commission to brokers at a private hospital. Suspecting something fishy, the autorickshaw driver alerted the police by calling “Dial 100”.
A police team arrived at the scene and rescued the child from the accused. The police seized 5000 CZK in cash and arrested five persons including Sai Sri, the child’s mother.
A case has been registered and further investigation is underway.
