Atrocious: Shreyas Iyer breaks character as India slump to new low in T20Is
Shreyas Iyer remains winless five matches into his T20I captaincy. Promoted to the national team on the back of incredible success in franchise cricket, Iyer is yet to take that form to the international stage.
A shaky start to the captaincy would be understandable if this star-studded Indian side at least showed signs of fight. But on Tuesday night, thousands of miles away in England, things went awry.
Shreyas Iyer’s India struggling to keep the series alive has imploded. Chasing 202 at Trent Bridge, they were bowled out for just 76.
A 15-year-old boy got the highest score on Tuesday.
Vaibhav Sooryavanshi made 13 off five balls before searing bouncer Jofra Archer forced him to a hook that ended up in Jose Buttler’s gloves. Earlier, he cheekily sliced Archer over third man for six as he refused to be bowled over by one of the fastest bowlers in world cricket.
Understandably, the youngster, inexperienced in international cricket, came out looking to beat his IPL teammate.
But what excuse did the rest of the Indian team have?
76 all the way out.
Three-time T20 World Cup winning team. The first team to defend the title of world champion. The first team to win it at home. Yet they conceded against Harry Brook’s England, who took an unassailable 2-0 lead in the five-match series.
‘Atrocious’
Chasing Shreyas Iyer could not be found in the post-match interview.
For perhaps the first time since taking over as captain, there was no defiance. No “we’ll be fine”. No hint of the carefree confidence that often defined him.
Instead, Shreyas was disgusted. Irritated. Angry.
“I think it was terrible,” Shreyas said of India’s performance.
It is a rare word in Indian cricket. Shreyas Iyer’s start in the Indian captaincy did not go as many expected. (Image: Reuters)
Captains are almost ready to avoid such words. Years of media training have yielded conversations full of phrases like “process,” “manageable,” “educational experiences” and “fine edges.” They are jargons that say something without actually saying anything.
“Atrocious” is not one of them.
And it wasn’t like the word just fell out.
He doubled down.
“I couldn’t have used a better word, honestly. To lose by such a big margin is absolutely unacceptable,” he added.
Then came the jargon, the media training kicked in, knowing full well that words can be taken out of context and later held like a gun to one’s head.
“First of all, I feel we have to accept this loss and completely go back to the drawing board and see what we did wrong,” the India captain said.
HOW BAD WAS INDIA’S DEFEAT?
To put things into context, here’s how bad India’s loss was.
- 76 is the second lowest total India have ever made in T20I history.
- This is India’s lowest T20I total in 18 years (since 2008).
- India lost by 125 runs, their biggest defeat by runs in T20I history.
India did not go unbeaten between the 2024 and 2026 T20 World Cups because they were unbeaten. They also lost matches before that. The difference was that those defeats felt like days off.
This is different.
Shreyas has now led India in five T20Is. Two defeats in Ireland. One flush in England. Two more defeats.
Four losses in five games.
More worrying than the results is how India looked.
WAS INDIA UNPREPARED?
In Ireland, India looked unprepared. Shreyas later admitted that India took the opposition too lightly and did not study enough about the country’s unique dimensions. There seemed to be no rhythm to the bowling changes at Trent Bridge.
After India started with the girl, she let it slide. On a wicket that required hard lengths and high pace, India repeatedly turned to slower balls and cutters, allowing England’s batsmen to line them up. Jos Buttler was the first to get loose but India actually defended well with the ball.
Prince Yadav produced a perfect yorker at Buttler Castle with the first ball of his magic. A few attempts later he also outwitted Harry Brook.
Then he was taken down.
Harshit Rana struck twice to remove Jacob Bethell and Tom Banton. He was on a hat trick.
He too was taken down.

Phil Salt, struggling badly with the new ball, recovered from his slow start to play a magnificent knock of 70 off 44 balls. Sam Curran finished the innings superbly as England plundered 89 runs in the last eight overs.
After the bowling changes failed in India, Shreyas somehow found a way to blame the bowlers.
“When I look at the wicket, I don’t think it was a 200-run wicket,” he said.
Then came India’s batting.
Jofra Archer and Josh Tongue asked one simple question: can Indian batsmen handle real pace?
The answer was an emphatic no.
India’s intent was never in doubt, but intent unchecked quickly turned into recklessness. Abhishek Sharma fell. Ishan Kishan followed him. Vaibhav Sooryavanshi’s fun cameos with five balls ended up trying to take on Archer. Shreyas flicked a half volley straight to deep square leg. Axar Patel stood up for him.

The next step only added to the confusion. Harshit Rana walked out ahead of Shivam Dube, leaving commentators and fans equally confused. It was the kind of decision that reflected a team searching for answers in the midst of a collapse.
After the game, Shreyas pointed to the bat.
“The way we batted, we lost five wickets in the power play. I think that in itself created momentum.”
He wasn’t wrong. India’s batting was brutal. His word, not mine.
Maybe that’s why it resonated. Indian captains rarely move beyond the rehearsed phrases of ‘process’ and ‘learning’. On Tuesday, Shreyas did. For once there was no attempt to disguise the ignominious defeat.
He called it exactly what it was.
He now has two games left to ensure that “cruel” remains the description of one night and not the defining word of his captaincy.
– The end
