Technological self-sufficiency should be the main goal of Indian universities, said N. Kalaiselvi, Director General of the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research and Secretary, Department of Scientific and Industrial Research. Addressing the ninth convocation ceremony, during which 923 degrees were conferred, at the Central University of Kerala (CUK), Ms Kalaiselvi said indigenous technology must meet most of the national needs as the country moves towards the 2047 development goal.
She said rapid technological shifts required universities to set up more startup and incubation centers, noting that earlier restrictions on access to technology had slowed India’s progress. The country has overcome this through policies favoring science and technology, recognizing science as an integral part of everyday life, not just an academic pursuit, she added.
Ms. Kalaiselvi praised ČUK for initiatives such as the seed fund for research and the Earn While You Learn program, which enables students to support themselves during their studies. She urged the students to turn job seekers into job creators and focus on making meaningful contributions to society.
Highlighting Kerala’s achievements in literacy and poverty eradication, she also highlighted the unique identity of Kasaragod as a blend of seven languages and highlighted the enabling environment for women empowerment in the country.
Of the graduates, 36 received a bachelor’s degree, 771 a master’s degree, 36 a PhD degree and 80 a PG diploma. A total of 750 graduates attended the event in person. Gold medals were also awarded to deserving students.
Acting Chancellor Siddu P. Algur, Acting Vice-Chancellor Vincent Mathew and other members of the university’s statutory bodies were present.
