A total of 63 stuck people, mostly tourists, were evacuated on Thursday (June 5, 2025) by helicopters from Chaten in northern Sikkim, which was hit by landslide at the beginning of this week, the officials said.
Sixty -four tourists are still waiting for Chaten to be saved by the army and local administration. The operation to rescue was dismissed due to bad weather and demanding terrain during the day, the officials said.
Chaten is located near Lacken, a small town in the Mangan district, which passengers use to achieve Lake Gurudangmar, which is a popular tourist destination.
Officials said two Mi-17 helicopters were used to evacuate 39 people from the Pakyong airport, the officials said.
Four other people were evacuated in the Gepardh helicopter, while the Mi-17 helicopter made a direct way from Bagdograph in the neighboring West Bengal to the matter and carried 20 passengers, they said.
Meanwhile, two Mi-17 V5 helicopters are located at the Pakyong airport for deployment in evacuation operation.
State government officials were also in constant coordination with armed forces to protect their lives and give relief to the stressed people.
Three army staff were killed, six soldiers disappeared, and several others were injured after 1 June in the evening of June hit lands on a military camp in Chaten.
