In another bus fire, two people died and 10 others were injured when a private sleeper bus they were traveling in caught fire after hitting a high-tension power line near Manoharpur on the Jaipur-Delhi National Highway on Tuesday. The bus was carrying over 50 workers from Pilibhit in Uttar Pradesh to the brick kiln.
Some household items, gas cylinders and two-wheelers stored on the roof of the bus touched an 11 kV power line when the vehicle was crossing an internal road near a village in Manoharpur, about 55 kilometers from Jaipur. As the overcrowded bus burst into flames after coming in contact with power lines, passengers jumped out of the vehicle’s windows.
While most of the injured suffered burns, some others suffered electrical injuries. Six critically injured victims were sent to Jaipur’s Sawai Man Singh Government Hospital, while the rest were treated at Shahpura sub-district hospital.
Deputy Chief Minister Prem Chand Bairwa, who is in charge of the transport portfolio, said an investigation into the accident would be launched. A forensics team also arrived at the accident site to collect evidence.
A similar fire in an air-conditioned sleeper bus near Jaisalmer on October 14 left over 25 passengers dead and several others injured. The fire was caused by a short circuit in the bus, which was modified to fix the beds and the emergency exit gate was missing.
Rajasthan Governor Haribhau Bagade and Chief Minister Bhajan Lal Sharma condoled the loss of life. Mr. Sharma directed the officials to ensure proper medical treatment for the injured.
