Mings Slams Villa’s Performance as ‘Not Good Enough’ After Poor Monaco Defeat
Aston Villa defender Tyrone Mings has unleashed a scathing critique of his team’s performance after their disappointing 3-0 defeat to Monaco in the Europa League on Thursday.
The Villains struggled to create any meaningful chances against the French side, and Mings was left frustrated by his team’s inability to impose themselves on the game.
"We’re not good enough," Mings told reporters after the match. "We’re not good enough to compete at this level. We’re not good enough to win games like this. We’re not good enough to compete with teams like Monaco."
Mings’ blunt assessment was echoed by his manager, Dean Smith, who acknowledged that Villa had been outplayed by a more clinical and efficient Monaco side.
"We didn’t start the game well, and we didn’t create enough chances," Smith said. "Monaco were the better team tonight, and they deserved the win. We’ve got to learn from this and move on."
The defeat was Villa’s third in their last five games, and it leaves them with a mountain to climb if they are to qualify for the knockout stages of the Europa League. With just three points from their opening four games, Villa are currently bottom of Group E, and they will need to improve significantly if they are to turn their season around.
Mings, who has been one of Villa’s most consistent performers this season, was at a loss to explain his team’s poor performance against Monaco.
"I don’t know what’s going on," he said. "We’re a team that’s capable of beating anyone, but we’re also a team that’s capable of losing to anyone. We’re inconsistent, and that’s not good enough.
"We need to find a way to be more consistent, to be more professional, and to be more clinical in front of goal. We can’t keep making the same mistakes and expecting to get away with it. We need to learn from this and move on."
Villa will look to bounce back from their defeat when they face Crystal Palace in the Premier League on Sunday.
