The Election Commission on Thursday (April 30, 2026) introduced a QR code-based photo ID system to eliminate the possibility of unauthorized persons entering counting centres.
After its introduction during the census, which will be held on May 4 for council elections from Assam, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, West Bengal and Puducherry and by-elections in seven assembly constituencies in five states, the system will be extended to all future general and by-elections to the Lok Sabha and state legislative assemblies, the EC said in a statement.
