Assam | An AJP candidate’s mother filed a complaint with the NCW against Himanta for making “harmful” remarks
Guwahati: Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP) candidate Kunki Chowdhury’s mother, Sujata Gurung Chowdhury, has filed a complaint with the National Commission for Women (NCW) against Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, alleging that he made “false, baseless and damaging” statements during the assembly polls campaign.
In her complaint filed on 11 April 2026, senior Chowdhury alleged that Mr Sarma’s statements were “intended to defame” her and “politically target” the Assam Jatiya Parishad candidate for Guwahati Central and demanded legal action against the CM for “inciting” people with “false propaganda”. Mr. Sarma has not yet commented on the complaint against him.
On 2 April, a BJP leader alleged that Sujata Gurung Chowdhury shared posts on social media related to eating beef, made offensive remarks against certain sections of society and supported Pakistan, hurting the sentiments of “Sanatani” people.
Mr. Sarma repeated the same allegations in the subsequent phase of the campaign and even said that he would take action against Kunki’s parents for allegedly eating beef and uploading his picture on social media. – PTI
