Assault of a minor: lawsuit against nursing home manager, staff
An investigation led by the District Child Protection Officer (DCPO) at a nursing home in Omalloor found that a 17-year-old boy was subjected to child labor and physical abuse during his stay at the institution.
The investigation was launched after the boy, who had returned to his home in Idukki district from an old age home, reported the alleged abuse to Childline. During the inspection, officials also identified another 17-year-old boy from Kottayam staying at the facility. The rescued minor was presented to the Committee for the Protection of Children (CWC).
After the findings, the police registered a case against the head of the retirement home Reji and the employees Sijo and Benny. The case was initially registered by the Kattappana police and has since been handed over to the Pathanamthitta police for further investigation as the institution is under their jurisdiction.
The accused were charged under various provisions, including charges related to physical assault, assault with a weapon, unlawful imprisonment, child labor and offenses under the Juvenile Justice Act. The police have launched further investigations into the incident and the functioning of the institute.
