The Puducherry First Judicial Magistrate has issued a strict direction to Tamil Nadu Finance Minister N. Maria Wilson to appear before the court on July 10 to receive a supplementary charge sheet filed by the Lawspet police in a case involving assault on a woman.

Mr Wilson was due to appear in court on Saturday (July 4, 2026) to receive the charge. However, his lawyer informed the court of his inability to appear due to his ministerial duties. After hearing from his counsel, the court ordered the minister to “infallibly appear in person” to receive the indictment and the pen which the complainant had submitted as evidence of the offense alleged to have been committed by Mr Wilson.

The case was filed in 2022 by Careline Claude, wife of the minister’s brother, who lives in Ezhil Nagar in Puducherry city. She complained that the minister barged into her house and assaulted and abused her over a property dispute.

A case was registered by the Lawspet police after the incident. However, the woman disputed the First Information Report, saying it was only citing soft provisions of the law against Mr Wilson. On the instructions of the court, the police filed a new indictment citing serious provisions. As part of the proceedings, the court ordered the accused to appear before it and receive a supplementary indictment.
