Assamese girl dies one month after stalker attack killed in encounter

More than a month after she was attacked by a stalker, Mridumudra Deka succumbed to her injuries at Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) on Friday (July 3, 2026) morning.

Eighteen-year-old Mridumudra Deka was critically injured when accused Roz Ali, who was in love with her, attacked her while she was heading home along with her cousin Madhurjya Barman on the night of May 30 at Mukalmua in Nalbari district of west Assam. Madhurjya died on the spot.

Mridumudra was taken to GMCH, about 50 km east of where the incident took place, with serious injuries. “Initially she showed signs of recovery, but in the last 24 hours her condition worsened,” said one of the doctors who treated her.

The attack sparked outrage in Assam. Residents, student bodies and organizations in Mukalmua demanded swift action.

The police tracked down Mr Ali the following day, where he was shot dead after allegedly grabbing an officer’s firearm and attempting to flee.
