Two northeast states have froze on identification documents to limit the unauthorized cross -border movement of the Bangladesh and Myanmar citizens.
The Assam Government has decided to implement the AADHAAR card policy for adults only through district commissioners (DCS) to prevent Bangladeshi nationals from their acquisition, while the Mizoram government plans to maintain the identities of Myanmar nationals to regulate movements across borders.
The main Minister of Assam Himanta Bisw Sarma said that it is necessary to discuss at the meeting of the State Cabinet on Friday (June 27, 2025) that the Aadhaar card rules need to be reinforced.
“There are usually people who come to Assam and Bharat from Bangladesh (illegally) adults. Because we have already achieved 100% Aadhaar coverage, we will thoroughly apply for new adult applications,” he told reporters in Guwahati.
“Soon, DCS will only have the power to issue Aadhaar cards. If such a policy is created, Aadhaar will be difficult for Bangladeshi people. Detection and pushing back will be easy if he does not have this document,” he said a few hours after he announced that another 20 illegal Bangladeshi was back.
The government led by Bharatiya Janata has been working to involve the vulnerability of Aadhaar since April, when Mr. Sarma said that people who did not request inclusion in the National Citizens’ Register were forbidden to obtain a unique identification number.
In September 2024, he said four ASAM districts have more AADHAAR card holders than their expected population. Bengal-Moving Muslims are mostly in these districts-barpet bordering on Bangladesh, Dhubri, Morigaon and Nagoon.
“We found that 103.74% of the population was issued by Aadhaar cards in Barpet, 103.48% in Dhubri, 101.74% in Morigaon and 100.68% in Nagon. Some immigrants have definitely managed to take Aadhaar,” he said.
In Aizawl, the main Minister Lalduhom has designed the seizure of myanmar’s identification cards who often move to India in the middle of the civil war in their country. With this proposal, he came to a meeting with Surinder Bhagat, a joint secretary of the Ministry for the External Affairs and the General Protector of Emigrants, in the Office of the Chief Minister.
Mr. Lalduhoma has recognized the humanitarian crisis in Myanmar and forces many people to resort to Mizoram, and said, “Many refugees follow the law, but some who continue to go to AZ Myanmar.
He warned against a strict action against those who abuse the hiding place, including the seizure of their myanmar identity documents. He suggested that such an ID be collected from every national national national for the period of stay in Mizoram.
The main minister also stated that the government has begun to collect biometric data of people entering the state from Myanmar.
