Members of Assam Jatiya Parisad (AJP) on Wednesday (September 3, 2025) organized protests against the decision of the Center to extend the deadline for granting Indian citizenship to refugees from three neighboring countries under the citizenship Act (amendment) by 10 years.
The announcement issued by the Ministry of the Interior stated that people belonging to minority communities in Afghanistan, Bangladesh and Pakistan who were forced to resort in India 31 December 2024 or earlier because of religious persecution could remain without passport or other travel documents.
Caa, which came into force in 2024, initially offered a rapidly monitored citizenship of non -Muslims who fled from three neighboring countries 31 December 2014 or earlier.
The AJP, born of the violent Anti-Caa movement in Assam, described the extension of the term as the “greatest crime” as he was committed against Assam’s people, and accused the party leading the party of Bharatiya Janat retaining historical injustice.
The leaders and employees of the regional party have torn several copies of the new CAA announcement and set them on fire by a symbolic act of defiance.
Slams bjp
President AJP Lurinjoti Gogoi and Secretary General Jagadish Bhuyan accused BJP of the end of the very existence of Assames for the voices of Hindu Bangladesh.
“BJP leaders know very well that the number of Assam speakers is decreasing year by year. In every decade, the share of Asam-speaking people fell by approximately 5%. According to the 2011 census, only 48% of Assam’s population spoke,” Duo said.
“Although BJP knew, BJP pushed Caa to legalize illegal foreigners and accelerate the erosion of the Assam identity. By extending the term CAA for another 10 years increased Assam’s burden from 43 years of foreigners to 53 years.
Congress, decision AAP Flay Center
The Congress Assam unit and the AAM AADMI (AAP) party condemned the decision of the Center to extend the term CAA. “The announcement of September 1 is a black day for Assam. It further reduces the importance of Assam’s agreement prescribed on March 24, 1971, as a date of restriction for the detection and deportation of foreigners living illegally in the state,” said the leader of the Congress Legislative Party Debabrat Saikia. He also stated that the party leadership has written to organizations such as All Assam Union for a coordinated protest against the decision.
“Before taking this decision, Prime Minister Narendra Modi or Interior Minister AMIT Shah 146 consulted the people of Crore in India?” Rajib Saikia, General Secretary of AAP (organization) asked.
