
Days after winning the Assam Assembly elections for the third time, Himanta Biswa Sarma resigned as the Chief Minister of the state. He said the legislature party will decide on the next chief minister and the oath-taking ceremony is likely to be held after 11.
Assam Election Results 2026: The BJP-led NDA secured a hat-trick in the recently concluded state elections. The coalition won 102 seats in the 126-member parliament. The ruling BJP won 82 seats and its allies Bodoland People’s Front (BPF) and Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) won 10 seats each.
Congress won 15 seats. The All India Trinamool Congress (AITC) won one seat and the All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) won two seats. In a setback for the Congress, party leader Gaurav Gogoi lost the Jorhat constituency to BJP’s Hitendra Nath Goswami by a margin of 23,182 votes.
The election was held in a single phase on April 9 and the results were announced on May 4.

Himanta Biswa Sarma resigns
Himanta Sarma resigned along with his cabinet colleagues on Wednesday, paving the way for the formation of a new BJP-led government.
The governor accepted the resignation and asked Sarma to continue as caretaker CM till the new government takes office.
“Following the formal announcement of the #AssamElections2026 results and to enable the formation of a new government, Dr. Himanta Biswa tendered his resignation as Chief Minister along with the resignation of the Council of Ministers to Hon’ble Governor Shri @Laxmanacharya54 at Lok Bhawan today,” the Chief Minister’s office said in a post on X.
After resigning as CM, Biswa Sarma also told reporters, “I have handed over my resignation letter as the Chief Minister of Assam to the Governor of Assam and simultaneously requested him to dissolve the present Assam Assembly.”
“The Governor of Assam has accepted my resignation letter and the proposal to dissolve the current Assam Assembly and has directed the Assam Ministry to continue as a caretaker council of ministers until a new government is formed. I think the new government will be formed soon. During this time we will work as a caretaker government,” said Biswa Sarma.
Who will be the next CM?
Whether Himanta Biswa Sarma will continue to be the Chief Minister of Assam or the BJP will choose a new leader, the CM remains to be seen. Sarma became the CM of Assam for the first time in 2021, succeeding Sarbananda Sonowal, the first BJP Chief Minister of the state.
On next Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma said Union Minister JP Nadda and Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini have been appointed as central observers by BJP National President Nitin Nabin.
“The legislature party will decide who will be the next CM and leader. After the legislature party meeting, we will again return to the Lok Bhawan and stake a claim to form the government,” Sarma said.
At the swearing-in ceremony, he added, “There is an indication that the swearing-in will take place after May 11 because this time we have invited the Prime Minister to grace the swearing-in ceremony of our government. We have invited the Prime Minister because we have achieved the hat-trick of a century this time.”
