Main Minister Assam Himanta Biswa Sarma on Friday (June 13, 2025) issued an order to shoot municipal tension in Dhubri, about 290 km west of Guwahati. The city, headquarters of the Dhubri district, has been on the edge since the head of the cow was cut off in front of the Hanuman Temple on June, the day after the id-ul-zha (Bakrid) was observed.
“This matter was solved when the leaders of both communities met, but the head of another cow was placed in the same place the next day and escalated tension,” Mr. Sarma told reporters after a visit to Dhubri to assess the situation in the law.
“I have ordered the filming in Dhubri if there is any kind of undesirable situation. The command is applicable to any illegal activity, including a stone decline,” he said.
The main minister also issued a directive to immediately the arrest of all known criminals in the district, which he said, the fundamentalist forces in Bangladesh had targeted for a long time. “The central security forces were deployed in the area of communally sensitive areas to maintain peace and order,” he said.
He also said that there was an organized attempt to encourage municipal unrest through the campaign to make Dhubri part of Bangladesh. He said that the Art Nouveau posters attributed to the group called “Nabin Bangla” were inserted into parts of the district – one even on the infrastructure of the army signals – calling for Dhubri to become part of Bangladesh.
“A number of events aimed at evoking municipal violence suggest that Bangladesh’s forces are working in Dhubri,” he said.
Mr. Sarma also said that the new network of cattle smugglers has increased its activities in the last few months and brought cattle in large numbers from West Bengal. “We will explore who is behind this network,” he said, asserting the government’s commitment to promote law and order and defeat all the municipal forces.
Muslims, mostly Bengal speakers, are in most of the Dhubri district. According to the census in 2011, Muslims represent almost 74% of the district population.
