Main Minister Assam Himanta Biswa Sarma on Thursday (August 7, 2025) criticized his counterpart to the West Bengal Mamata Banerjee for the “attempt to scare the Bengals by throwing the Sword of National Citizens’ register (NRC) before the elections by 2026.
The elections to the assembly in Assam and West Bengal are due at the beginning of next year.
Mr. Sarma said that Mrs. Banerjee of NRCs were unfounded.
“Suddenly he says he won’t follow the NRC. Who asked her to listen to the NRC? Where is the NRC? No one ordered NRC,” he told reporters in Guwahati on Thursday (August 7, 2025) Night.
“He has been afraid of the minds of Bengal people to gain their votes. She has not spoken about the NRC in the last five years. Now they are talking about all these things because the elections are coming,” he said.
Mrs. Banerjee described some “NRC” announcements issued to the inhabitants of West Bengal, mostly Bengal Hindu, the courts of foreigners (FTS) in Assam. One such case was the case Uttam Kumar Brajabasi, resident of Dinhaty in Cooch Behar for 50 years.
Mr. Sarma claimed that Mr. Brajabasi was a citizen of Assam, who temporarily went to West Bengal and that the announcement issued to him was part of the trial.
The main minister who refuted the reports also said that the Government Assam has not adopted any “special decision” to abandon the cases of non -Muslim illegal migrants who entered India from Afghanistan, Bangladesh and Pakistan before 2015 from FTS.
“The state cabinet decided to cancel the cases of people Koch-Rajbanshi and Gurkha of FTS, but there was no special decision for others.
“The case (related to CAA) is in the Supreme Court. If the Supreme Court does not intervene, it is the law of the country,” he added.
According to official records, eight people in Assam have applied for Indian citizenship within CAA on July 15, and only two appeared for the interview.
The 1951 NRC in Assam was updated under the Supreme Court’s watch. More than 19.06 Lakh 3.3 crore applicants were omitted from a complete proposal published in August 2019.
