BJP candidate Devashish Sharma has built a sizable lead of 75,248 votes over his nearest rival, AIUDF chief Badruddin Ajmal, as counting of votes polled in the Nagaon Lok Sabha seat in Assam was underway on Friday, according to the Election Commission.

Mr Sharma, a retired IAS officer, got 1,81,017 votes while Ajmal got 1,05,769 votes and Congress candidate Sibamoni Bora was a distant third with 29,826 votes, the ECI said on its website.

Counting of votes began at 8 am on Friday (October 9, 2026) amid tight security, officials said.

The process began with postal ballots followed by votes recorded in EVMs. The counting is being done in two centers — Dawson Higher Secondary School and Nagaon Government Boys’ School in Nagaon — with 14 desks in each centre.

The parliamentary constituency has eight assembly segments spread across the two districts of Nagaon and Morigaon.

Tight security arrangements have been made at both the centers and all candidates and political parties have been asked to seek permission from the district administration before taking out any procession. The main match is between Sharma, Bora and Ajmal.

A total of 15 candidates are in the running in the pre-election survey.

In the survey of October 6, a voter turnout of 76.19% was recorded.

The bypoll was necessitated after Congress MP Pradyut Bordoloi resigned and successfully contested the assembly election from Dispur on a BJP ticket earlier this year. However, the result will not affect the balance of power in the parliament.

Nagaon constituency has 19.05 million voters, including 9.43 million women and 50 third gender voters, who could cast their votes in 2,312 polling stations.
