The Assam unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party flagged off ‘Jan Ashirwad Yatra’ on Saturday, February 28, 2026, a rally aimed at seeking the “blessings” of people in 50 assembly constituencies in the central and eastern parts of the state.
Assam, where assembly elections are likely to be held in April, has 126 seats. The eastern half of the state has been the most fertile region for the BJP since the 2016 elections.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma inaugurated the yatra from the Gupteshwar temple at Dhekiajuli in north Assam’s Sonitpur district. Minister of State for Health Ashok Singhal represents Dhekiajuli constituency.
“Our aim is to seek the blessings of the people for the upcoming elections, to take the message of development, good governance and social systems to their doorsteps,” the chief minister said, urging party workers to intensify grassroots engagement during the campaign.
Party officials said the BJP aims to reach at least one million people in several districts every day till March 9, the last day of the yatra. The first stop of the yatra was Balipara, about 45 km east of Dhekiajuli.
BJP’s Lakhimpur MP Pradan Baruah, who participated in the programme, said gathering feedback from the people on the party’s performance was a major component of the yatra. This would help the BJP fine-tune its strategies, he added.
“Several senior national and party leaders will accompany the Chief Minister during various stages of the trip,” he said.
The BJP, which won 60 seats in 2021, aims to secure at least 64, a simple majority in the House. The party set a target of more than 100 seats for the National Democratic Alliance, which won 75 seats in 2021.
