In a major boost to the spiritual reach of Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD), the Government of Assam has agreed in principle to allot 25 acres of land in Guwahati for the construction of a Lord Venkateswara temple, marking a major step towards establishing the first such shrine in Northeast India. The decision followed a series of consultations between Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu.
The extent of the land was increased from the originally proposed 10.8 acres after concerns were raised about overlapping with the existing temple and cultural complex in the Kamrup metropolitan district. In a letter dated December 18, Mr Naidu urged the Assam government to allot land in Guwahati, citing the city’s strategic importance as a gateway to the northeast. He also recalled that Andhra Pradesh had earlier earmarked 25 acres of land in Amaravati for a similar temple.
The Government of Assam responded positively and agreed to extend financial support to the project. Thanking both the Chief Ministers, TTD Chairman BR Naidu said that the required formalities would be completed soon and the construction of the Lord Venkateswara Temple would begin as soon as possible.
