(PTI Photo) NEW DELHI: India on Sunday added seven more medals to its 2026 Asian Games tally, but the haul was not enough to keep the country in the top ten medal standings.India ended Day 8 with 37 medals – four gold, 16 silver and 17 bronze – but dropped from 10th to 12th position. The drop came despite a significant medal tally as India did not add a gold, while countries above it continued to pile up gold medals and increase their totals.China continued to dominate the Games after breaking the 200-medal mark, with 119 gold, 48 silver and 38 bronze for 205 medals. Seven medals but no gold for India

India’s seven medals on Sunday included two silvers in squash and five in athletics.Parul Chaudhary produced one of the top performances of the day when she broke her personal best to win bronze in the women’s 3000m steeplechase. After winning silver in Hangzhou 2023, she clocked 9:08.67, a new national record, to win her second steeplechase medal at the Asian Games.Bahrain’s Winfred Yavi won gold in 9:04.36 while Kazakhstan’s Norah Jeruto Tanui took silver. India’s Ankita finished fourth in a personal best of 9:19.24.Sarvesh Kushare and Ancy Sojan also won silver medals after leading their individual finals for significant periods. Sarvesh cleared 2.25m but finished second to Chinese Taipei’s Chao Hsuan-Fu, while Ancy’s 6.53m was bested by China’s Huang Yingying, who cleared 6.55m in her last attempt.Harita Bhadra earlier won bronze in the women’s 200m in 23.20 seconds, beating Japan’s Ido Abigeirufuka by 0.01 seconds.Tejaswin Shankar completed India’s athletics campaign with a bronze in the decathlon. He won the final 1500 m race in 4:33.09 and finished with 7934 points. Japan’s Yuma Maruyama won the gold with 8123 points.

Squash lacks gold, boxing adds three certain medals

India’s wait for a squash singles gold continued as both Anahat Singh and Abhay Singh lost their finals to their Malaysian opponents. Sivasangari Subramaniam defeated Anahat 11-4, 11-4, 11-7 while Ng Eain Yow defeated Abhay 11-9, 11-5, 11-5.Anahat’s silver was historic as she became the first Indian woman to reach the singles final in squash at the Asian Games.India’s medal prospects improved in boxing, with Parveen Hooda, Ankush Panghal and Narender all reaching the semi-finals and securing medals.The day’s results underscore the challenge in the medal table: India won seven more medals but added no gold, while countries above them continued to increase their gold medal totals.
