Asian Games: India silver in 4x400m medley relay after stunning finish by Vithya

India clinched a silver medal in the 4x400m medley relay at the Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya on Thursday with a stunning last-leg performance from Vithya Ramraj helping the quartet finish second behind Bahrain. The medal took India’s total at the Games to 17.

The Indian team of Poovamma Raju, Vishal Thennarasu, Manu TS and Vithya Ramraj clocked 3:14.46 in the final to successfully defend the silver medal they won at the 2023 Hangzhou Asian Games.

Bahrain won the gold medal in a Games record 3:12.87, while Vietnam finished third in 3:14.54, just 0.09 seconds behind India.

AMAZING FINAL LEG BY VITHYA

India looked set for bronze before Vithya Ramraj produced a brilliant final leg to propel the team to second place. The Indian runner timed her surge perfectly in the closing stages, overtaking the bronze medal and helping India secure another silver.

The result saw India repeat their podium finish from Hangzhou, where the 4x400m mixed relay team also won silver. It was another productive day for Indian athletics, with Seema Kumari also winning a landmark bronze medal in the women’s 10,000m final.

Seema clocked 32:50.05 to end India’s 16-year wait for a medal in the women’s 10,000m at the Asian Games. With the two athletics medals on Thursday, India’s medal tally at the Asian Games moved to 17.
