Along with national recognition, athletes who win gold, silver or bronze are eligible for cash awards under the central government scheme. They can also qualify for sports quota jobs and other incentives announced by their respective state governments.Central cash awards are listed in the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports’ “Special Awards for Medal Winners at International Sports Events and Their Coaches” program. First introduced in 1986, the scheme has been revised over time with the stated aim of rewarding sporting achievements, encouraging higher performance and inspiring young people to take up sport.For an individual Asian Games medal, the top prize is Rs 30 million for gold, R 20 million for silver and R 10 million for bronze. How much does an individual medalist get?

Team medals: calculation is changing

For team events, the award scheme determines the number of athletes in the team on the ground. The multiplier is applied to the corresponding individual award for the competition, medal and category.A team of two will receive 1.5 times the matching prize; a team of three or four will receive double the prize; a team of five to ten people will receive three times the prize; and a team with more than 10 members will receive five times the award. The resulting amount is divided equally among the team members, with the condition that no member receives less than 50% of the corresponding individual award.The scheme defines team events as competitions in which athletes compete together and says that incentives are awarded to all team members, including bench or reserve players, in accordance with international standards applicable to each sport. It also provides that in certain sports, each team member’s monetary incentive is 75% of the incentive amount applicable to the corresponding individual event, based on medal, level and category of participation.These provisions mean that a team medal cannot simply be treated as the same flat award for every athlete. The final amount depends on the classification of the event, the strength of the team and the relevant provisions of the scheme.

More medals and top prize rule

The program also targets athletes who win more than one medal at an international event. In general, an athlete who wins multiple medals in individual or team categories is only eligible for a cash incentive for the highest placing medal won at that event.There is an important exception for the Olympic Games, Paralympic Games, Asian Games and Para-Asian Games: athletes who win multiple medals in individual or team categories may be eligible for a cash incentive for each medal, subject to the terms of the program.Therefore, for an Asian Games athlete who wins more than one medal, the main award may be counted on a medal-by-medal basis, rather than being limited to a single top finish. Can Asian Games medalists get government jobs?

Prize money is only one part of the potential support available to medal winners. Sportspersons who have represented India in recognized international competitions, including the Asian Games, may also be considered for recruitment under the sports quota provisions.At the central level, the recruitment of meritorious athletes is governed by the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT) guidelines and related office memoranda. The Central Framework generally provides for appointments to Group C and former Group D posts, subject to eligibility, recruitment rules and specific conditions applicable. It does not establish a general entitlement for each medal winner to be placed in Group A or Group B.The medal itself does not mean that the work is automatically awarded. Athletes must meet the relevant conditions and appointment is subject to the relevant recruitment process and rules. Separate provisions may also apply to civil servant service, including certain support or incentive arrangements where permitted.
