The main voter of India Ajit Agarkar explained some key decisions made during the announcement of the Asia Cup 2025 T20 team, in particular the omission of Shreyas Iyer and the appointment of SHUBMAN GILL for more captain. Despite the Iyer’s strong performance, including half a century against Australia in December 2023, Agarkar explained that the final composition of the team left a small space for him. “As for Shreyas, I think you have to tell him who can replace. No his fault, nor is it ours. It’s just because we have to choose 15 at the moment, he’ll have to wait for his chance,” Agarkar said. One of the main speaking points was Gill’s promotion as more captain under Suryakumar Yadav, who replaced Axar Patel. Agarkar appreciated Gill’s recent performances, especially during the England series, where he crossed expectations. “Gill’s appearance in England was something we expected, but he crossed it. Now there are more options for the highest ranking, and SHUBMAN was equally in great form. When they get to Dubai, they can decide to play XI according to opposition and conditions,” he said.

Agarkar also recalled that Gill had previously served as a more captain after the last T20 World Championship, suggesting that this step has been in work for some time. “Now that it is available, at least Suryakumar has two options. It is their headache to choose the launch set. Our was to select 15 and we have a real depth in the T20 cricket,” he added. In the absence of Yashasvi Jaiswal Agarkar said it was an unfortunate call, but stressed that the integration of Abhisheka Sharma was influenced by his ability to contribute with the ball. The Asia Cup 2025 starts on 9 September in SAE, with India entered the tournament under the leadership of Suryakumar and Gill as its representative.
