
Legendary singer and Padma Vibhushan Asha Bhosle passed away early today, April 12th. Asha Bhosle was 92 years old. One of the most iconic and versatile voices in the history of Indian music has left behind a legacy spanning more than eight decades.
Asha Bhosle was admitted to Breach Candy Hospital in Mumbai on Saturday evening after suffering from extreme exhaustion and a chest infection. Several agency reports cite sources as saying the veteran singer suffered a cardiac arrest and also had lung problems.
Doctor Pratit Samdani from Breach Candy Hospital confirmed the demise of the legendary singer. Dr Samdani also revealed the cause of her death – “multi-organ failure”.
“Asha Bhosale breathed her last at Breach Candy Hospital today. She died of multi-organ failure,” the doctor said.
Asha Bhosle’s granddaughter Zanai Bhosle had earlier confirmed her hospitalization. Asking for privacy at this time, Zanai said, “My grandmother Asha Bhosle has been admitted to the hospital due to extreme exhaustion and suffering from a chest infection… Treatment is ongoing and hopefully everything will be fine.”

In his condolence message, Prime Minister Narendra Modi mourned the demise of the legendary playback singer, calling her “one of the most iconic and versatile voices India has ever known”.
Prime Minister Modi said, “Deeply saddened by the passing of Asha Bhosle Ji, one of the most iconic and versatile voices India has ever known. Her extraordinary musical journey spanning decades enriched our cultural heritage and touched countless hearts across the globe. Be it her soulful melodies or vibrant compositions, her voice carried a timeless brilliance. I always love interacting with her family. admirers and music lovers will continue to inspire generations and her songs will forever resonate in people’s lives.”
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee expressed her heartfelt condolences to her family and friends and said she was an inspirational singer who had ruled the hearts of people for generations.
Mamata Banerjee added that Asha Bhosle’s contribution to Bengali music was also significant, noting, “She has also sung many Bengali songs and is also incredibly popular in Bengal. In 2018, we might award her our highest civilian award, ‘Bangabibhushan’.”
Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis also said in a post on X that Asha Tai’s passing was a moment of sadness for India and the world.
“This is a moment of sadness for music enthusiasts in India and across the world. She was known as the most versatile artist. Her service to music, service to music by the Mangeshkar family – we saw the demise of Lata didi and we see it today. We are all saddened… It is a great loss for all of us; we stand with the bereaved family,” Fadnavis said.
Leader of the Opposition (LoP) in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi said her art will remain immortal forever. He said: “Through her voice, her art will forever remain immortal among us. In this hour of sorrow, my deepest condolences go out to her surviving loved ones and admirers.”
