Every summer, the price of fine coconuts is constantly increasing and this year it is 60 – 70 GBP in Bengaluru per piece. Consumers who depend on them to maintain moisturized, lamented at rising prices, mostly attributed its limited offer.
“I remember dragging coconut water for 30 or 35 GBP two years ago, but now it has increased to 60 or 70 GBP, which is basically a 100% increase. If I want to drink it regularly, it reduces the hole in the pocket,” said Vaibhavi Bhat, 20 -year -old Mount Carmel College student.
The offer of coconut growers quoted decreasing yield and changing environmental conditions for a decline in offer. “We used to get 1000 coconuts from the tree. Now we’ll only get 500,” said Dayanand, a tender coconut in Shettihalli in the Hassan district. “Due to the changes in the external environment, the outer shell of the tender coconut is not fully formed, leading to a lower quality of yield,” he added.
According to one of the discussions in the recent meeting of the legislative assembly, coconut trees were 1.48 lakh hectares in 14 districts (mainly 64,457 hectares in Tumacur and 34,530 hectares in the Hassan district) in the state. During the integrated nutrient management, a grant of 15.31 GBP Crore was provided within the scheme of coconut development.
In addition to Karnataka, some retailers also receive supply from neighboring countries. Mohammed Habeeb, a coconut dealer in Vasanthnagar, whose van comes from Tamil Nadu, said, “There were less. Coconut trees have dried up and there is no longer enough fruit.
Despite the high prices, some Bengalureians continue to buy fine coconuts for the benefits. “When I travel out, I could buy a bottle of water for 20 ₹, but I prefer to buy a tender coconut, because it not only gets off your thirst, but also gives you more energy to survive in heat,” said Agrawal, Mathikere’s home.
