The price per kg of some varieties of rice has increased from around ₹45 to ₹80-85. People from poor backgrounds said that rising prices increased their monthly food budget and put a financial burden on them. They feared it would touch ₹100 per kg.

In a meeting with wholesalers and retailers on Tuesday, the Chief Ration Officer reviewed available rice stocks, prices and other aspects. It was attended by Hyderabad District Civil Supplies Officer K. Srinivas. In Medchal, the meeting was organized by District Civil Supplies Officer M. Srinivas Reddy.

The Chief Ration Officer has directed shopkeepers to put up notice boards at outlets detailing the variety of rice, available stock and price per kg. Details must be updated regularly. Officials must be alerted if there are gaps in supply. He said the ministry would monitor stocks and prices.
