Larsen and Toubro (L&T) set a new world record in the tunnel design using a disposable boring machine on a hard rock tunnel (TBM) on June 29 for the Rail Link Rishikesh-Kárnaprayag project, PTI reported.
SV Desai, all the time, L&T Limited, said the company “violated the world record by achieving a maximum progress of 790 meters per month (31 days) using a single Scheid Hard Rock TBM called Shiv”.
The first in the world for efficient use of TBM, says L&T
According to L&T officials, it was the first time in the world that a one -time Hard Rock TBM was “used in such an effective way”, the report said.
“In the last stage of boring work in May-June for the longest railway tunnel of the Earth TBM, named Shiv, dug 790 meters in 31 days and achieved a breakthrough,” added Rrakesh Arara, project director.
The arora added: “While the first TBM, named Shakti, completed 10.47 km of Tunnel Refine 16 April 2025, 12 days before the plan, the second TBM, Shiv, completed 10.29 km downline tunnel 29 June 2025, a day before the plan.
Challenges
Also speaking with PTI, Suresh Kumar, Head, Hydel and Tunnels Business, remembered several difficulties during work such as geological challenges (relaxed rocks/ shear zones and high water ingress) and unfavorable working conditions such as high temperature and humidity in long tunnels.
“In addition to geographical and logistical problems, there were problems such as qualified employees and mobilization and maintenance staff, refractive approval and operations in managing other parties, such as customers, local people and local authorities, as cumbersome,” Kumar said.
