Arsenal pecked by seagulls at Brighton, Spurs’ losing streak continues
Arsenal’s perfect start to their Premier League title defense came crashing down on Saturday as Brighton & Hove Albion produced a stunning 3-0 win over the south coast champions.
Arsenal have won seven consecutive games across competitions from the start of the season, including the opening four league games, but were thoroughly outplayed by a Brighton side celebrating their 125th anniversary.
Pascal Gross opened the scoring in the 31st minute with a low effort that went wide of the post before Charalampos Kostoulas doubled Brighton’s advantage with a similar finish following a counter-attack.
Arsenal looked to respond after the break and Brighton added a third when Chema Andres headed home from close range. The home side could have extended their lead even further as Arsenal’s defense was still under pressure.
The result moved Brighton into third place and handed Arsenal their first defeat of the season.
SPURS NEEDS CONTINUE
Tottenham Hotspur remain winless in the Premier League after a 3-2 home defeat to Aston Villa.
Villa took the lead in first-half stoppage time when Johan Manzambi came on after Tottenham were temporarily reduced to 10 men, with Micky van de Ven treated for a cut to his face.
Nicolas Jackson doubled Villa’s advantage in the 67th minute before Emi Buendia produced a stunning strike from distance in the 11th minute to put the visitors firmly in control.
Tottenham finally found their first league goals of the season late on as Conor Gallagher and Jan Paul van Hecke reduced the deficit, but the comeback came too late.
Villa secured their first league win of the campaign as Tottenham’s difficult start continued. Spurs have now lost three of their five league games and their next two matches have ended in draws.
The defeat increases the pressure on Roberto De Zerbi, whose side also suffered defeat in the League Cup earlier this week. Tottenham invested heavily over the summer, spending around $400 million on a major overhaul of the squad, but the results are yet to come.
To make matters worse, Spain right-back Pedro Porro was forced off with an injury in the first half.
NEWCASTLE HOLD
Newcastle United won 2-1 over promoted Hull City to hand the visitors their first league defeat of the season.
Newcastle raced into a two-goal lead inside the opening seven minutes, with Joe Willock and Lewis Hall finding the net in quick succession.
Hull fought back after the break and Mohamed-Ali Cho pulled one back midway through the second half, but Newcastle held on to claim all three points.
EVERTON EDGE IPSWICH
Everton continued their unbeaten start with a narrow 1-0 win over Ipswich Town.
Thierno Barry scored the only goal of the game to give Everton another three points and move into the top five of the Premier League.
The result kept Everton unbeaten while Ipswich went clean after a close game.
Coventry City were due to travel to Nottingham Forest later on Saturday, with the visitors still looking for their first points of the season.
