Liverpool manager Arne Slot has reportedly been in regular contact with Bayer Leverkusen right-back Jeremie Frimpong regarding a potential summer transfer. The Reds are preparing for the likely departure of Trent Alexander-Arnold, who has reportedly rejected a final contract offer and is set to join Real Madrid on a free transfer at the end of the season.
Alexander-Arnold’s expiring contract has been a major concern for Liverpool throughout the season, and the club has been actively searching for a replacement. Frimpong has been at the top of Liverpool’s list of targets since December, with Slot leading the charge to secure the Dutch defender.
According to Christian Falk, Slot and Frimpong held multiple phone calls last month to discuss the player’s future. While Slot has made his interest in Frimpong clear, he has also acknowledged that signing a new right-back is not Liverpool’s top priority, even with Alexander-Arnold’s impending departure.
Liverpool’s focus this summer will primarily be on securing a new striker and a centre-back. Frimpong has reportedly been informed that he will be the club’s third signing after addressing those positions. Frimpong’s contract with Leverkusen includes a €40 million (£33.7 million) release clause, which must be paid in full by any interested club.
Liverpool faces competition for Frimpong’s signature, with Manchester City and Barcelona also linked to the 24-year-old. Manchester United, who expressed interest in Frimpong last summer, are unlikely to join the race this year after signing Noussair Mazraoui and Patrick Dorgu.
As Liverpool prepares for a busy transfer window, Slot’s pursuit of Frimpong reflects the club’s strategy to strengthen key areas while managing the potential loss of Alexander-Arnold.
