Argentina’s obsession with black magic finally backfires in the World Cup finals
For the better part of five years, Argentina convinced the soccer world that emotion can be a tactical weapon.
Lionel Scaloni put the side in the image of Argentine football itself. They celebrated tackles as loud as goals, accepted confrontation as willingly as possession and turned every knockout match into a battle of nerves and skill. It worked. Argentina have won two Copa America titles, lifted the 2022 World Cup and reached another final with a chance to become the first country since Brazil in 1962 to retain football’s biggest prize.
Against Spain, however, the edge that defined this golden generation ended up being its undoing.
Lionel Messi has not announced the end of his international career and may wear the colors of Argentina again. But if it turns out to be his last World Cup appearance, there will always be a lingering feeling that he deserved a better stage on which to close this chapter of his remarkable career.
WHEN THE GAME CHANGES
There is nothing wrong with playing aggressively. Every big side knows when to commit a tactical foul, slow down the tempo or frustrate the opposition. Under Scaloni, Argentina managed these moments without losing sight of the larger goal. They did it against Spain.
Spain was not flashy but stayed true to its identity. On the side of Luis de la Fuente they dominated possession, trusted their passing and believed that patience would eventually create an opening. Argentina, on the other hand, disrupted rather than dictated most of the evening. Pulling off shirts became routine, the challenges came flying in and every stop became another opportunity to disrupt the Spanish rhythm. The result was a statistic that seemed hardly believable. Argentina didn’t register a single shot during normal time, becoming the first team to do so in va World Cup final. It was extraordinary for a side led by Lionel Messi.

COST OF INTENSITY
The physical cost of this approach was clear long before then Ferran Torres scored the winner in overtime.

In extra time, the Argentina coach did not make any more substitutions to change the game. He made them because the circumstances required it.
The contrast with Spain could hardly be greater. De la Fuente introduced Ferran Torres, Nico Williams and Dani Olmo to inject pace and creativity into the contest. Scaloni’s changes were increasingly reactive and limited his ability to change the tactical picture.
When Torres finally found the breakthrough in the 106th minute, it felt like reward for a team still thinking about how to win rather than simply survive.
FINAL WITHOUT MESSI
It would be easy to conclude that age has finally caught up with Messi.
The reality was more complicated.
At 39, Messi he no longer controls matches with constant dribbling or endless sprints. His influence comes in moments: a perfectly balanced pass, a masked ball or a clever move that unlocks the defence. However, these moments require teammates to run and create space around him.

Spain swarmed the spaces around their captain and he was pleased that there was little movement behind him. Possession was too short to establish any rhythm, attacks petered out before they got into dangerous areas and Messi found himself waiting for opportunities that never came.
The defining image of his evening was not a missed chance or a spectacular save. He was the greatest player of his generation, standing in advanced positions and waiting for a play that never reached him.
A CRUEL LESSON
Even the final moments reflected the Argentinian evening. He already carries a yellow card, Enzo Fernandez rushed in another pointless call at stop time and a second booking was shown. It was an avoidable rejection and it summed up a team whose emotions finally got the better of their judgment.

But this finale always leaves a sense of what might have been. Argentina didn’t lose because Spain outplayed them or because they lacked talent. They lost because they abandoned the balance that made them champions. The aggression that once complemented their football gradually replaced it, leaving them physically depleted, tactically limited and unable to form a meaningful attacking threat.
World Cup finals are usually remembered for moments of genius. This one became a reminder that even the best teams can get lost when emotion trumps performance.
For five years, Argentina lived on the edge and almost always found a way to get to the top. On the grandest stage of all, the same game eventually consumed them, leaving Messi with a World Cup final that, if it turns out to be his last, simply did not satisfy the greatest player of his generation.
