Argentina vs Spain: Will storm or forest fire smoke affect World Cup final?

The weather has emerged as an unexpected talking point ahead of the 2026 World Cup final, with concerns over smoke from Canadian wildfires and severe thunderstorms raising questions about the conditions for Argentina’s match against Spain in New York. While heavy rain and lightning disrupted preparations on Saturday, the latest forecasts suggest the weather could ultimately work in FIFA’s favour.

Smoke from Canadian wildfires has blanketed much of the northeastern United States in recent days, prompting air quality warnings in several states. AccuWeather Chief Meteorologist Tyler Roys told the Associated Press that a storm system moving through the region should push out the heaviest smoke before Sunday’s finale.

“There might be some lingering smoke that would fog things up, but it was very faint,” Roys said.

“In terms of the thickest smoke, the smoke that really hits the eyes and leads to poor air quality, which is not expected in New York or most of the Northeast.”

Jeff Berardelli, chief meteorologist and climate specialist at WFLA-TV, echoed that assessment, saying the storm will effectively clear the atmosphere before it begins.

“It won’t be dangerous anymore,” Berardelli said. “It will be dramatically better.

The improving forecast comes as a relief to FIFA after Saturday’s thunderstorms briefly disrupted preparations. Spain training was interrupted due to lightning in the area while heavy rain lashed the New York/New Jersey stadium. Authorities also asked people inside the site to take shelter as thunderstorms rolled through East Rutherford. FIFA later confirmed that it remained in close contact with local authorities and was monitoring both weather and air quality ahead of the final.

STORMS CAN BRING GOOD NEWS

Ironically, the same storm system that caused disruption on Saturday is expected to improve conditions for football’s biggest game.

According to meteorologists, the storm will sweep much of the smoke from the wildfires out of the region, leaving only a light haze after the excavation. Air quality in East Rutherford is forecast to improve from “unhealthy for sensitive groups” on Saturday to “moderate” on Sunday, posing little or no health risk to the general public.

Temperatures are expected to hover around 27 °C (80 °F) with light winds and relatively low humidity, conditions considered almost ideal for football.

“You couldn’t ask for much better weather for the World Cup,” added Berardelli.

FIFA REMAINS IN QUESTION

Despite encouraging forecasts, FIFA continues to monitor conditions ahead of the final between Argentina and Spain.

Saturday’s weather prompted a warning from New Jersey Gov. Mikey Sherrill, who warned residents of the possibility of damaging winds, flash flooding, tornadoes and large hail as storms swept through the state.

Fires continue to burn across Canada and parts of northern Minnesota, with hundreds of active fires still reported. But forecasters expect the heaviest smoke to remain over parts of the Midwest and Great Lakes region, far from New York, before the World Cup finals begin.
