
Schools in Tamil Nadu are closed on November 17 due to an orange warning for heavy rains. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a heavy rainfall warning for Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh and Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
In a post on X, the IMD said: “Heavy to very heavy rainfall expected over: Tamil Nadu (Nov 16-22), Kerala & Mahe (Nov 16-20), Coastal Andhra Pradesh & Yanam, Rayalaseema (Nov 17-18), Andaman & Nicobar Islands (Nov 18 & 21), Flooding, Flooding disruptions.💡 Stay informed, avoid unnecessary travel and follow local recommendations.”
Thus, all government, private and aided schools in Chennai, Chengalpattu, Tiruvallur and surrounding districts will remain closed on Monday due to continuous heavy rain and flooding in low-lying areas. District Collectors have confirmed the closure of schools in these districts, One India reported.
An orange alert is in place for Chengalpattu, Chennai, Kancheepuram Villupuram, Cuddalore, Ariyalur, Mayiladuthurai Nagapattinam, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur Pudukottai and Ramanathapuram districts in Tamil Nadu.
The intense rainfall prompted authorities to announce the closure of educational institutions across the state. In its latest press release, the IMD said, “Light to moderate rainfall/thunderstorm at most/many places with isolated heavy rainfall very likely over Tamil Nadu during 18-22.
Similar weather conditions are likely in Kerala till November 20, Andhra Pradesh on November 17 and 18 and Andaman and Nicobar Islands during the next four days.
Are schools open in Delhi-NCR and Bihar?
Schools in Delhi-NCR switched to hybrid mode following GRAP Phase 3 restrictions due to rising pollution levels. The national capital continues to grapple with severe air pollution as the average air quality index (AQI) of 360 was recorded at 6:05 am on Monday, which is in the very poor range, according to the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB).
Schools in Bihar have resumed normal school operations after being closed for the assembly elections. Patna, Gaya, Nalanda, Begusarai, Samastipur and several other districts were earlier affected by the election arrangement.
Although a “low pressure area over southwest Bay of Bengal” is also expected to bring heavy rainfall to Kerala, Andhra Pradesh and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, authorities have not yet announced any school closures.
