While several Hindu communities protested to join the caste prefixes to the Christian community (such as Brahman-Christian, Lingayat-Christian, Kububa-Christian, etc.), Archbishop Bangalore asked after the final analysis of the ongoing social and educational survey.
The Karnataka Class Commission masked 33 of such names in the list after the objections were raised.
Bangalore Archbishop Peter Machado, who addressed Prespersons, said he hopes that the government will restore the omission of some castes associated with the Christian community in the final analysis. “Removal, if they exist, risk that historical communities denies their legitimate recognition and can cause injustice in access to social security programs. The Church urges the government to take note of these exclusion and ensure just representation of all Christian communities,” he said.
He welcomed the survey and called on the government to ensure the fair representation of all Christian communities. He called on the community members to “consider this survey seriously and responsibly, to cooperate in the spirit of civil duty.”
The Archbishop underlines the importance of the survey and stated that it will help identify the real recipients of government policies for economic and social care. “The survey will provide a clear classification of different groups of caste groups, allowing the framing of policies and programs that are fair, inclusive and based on needs, and help the state to remedy the differences to ensure the weakest and most marginalized,” he said.
He called on the Christian community to cooperate and take a survey seriously, and said that “the fair and complete census is not only a constitutional exercise, but also a step to ensure justice, justice and good life conditions for all Karnataka communities.”
