The district administration has denied permission for fireworks in the upcoming Arattupuzha Pooram festival.
According to an order issued by the next district magistrate, permission was sought to conduct fireworks on March 24, 29 and 30 as part of the celebrations. However, the application was rejected after the authorities found that the necessary safety conditions could not be met at the proposed site.
Officials noted that several homes were located within 100 meters of the fireworks site. In previous years, fireworks at the same location have reportedly caused damage to nearby houses.
The order also warned that it would not be possible to maintain the mandatory safety distance of 100 meters between the place where fireworks are set off and the place where spectators gather. In the absence of adequate physical conditions to ensure a safe display, the administration concluded that the performance of fireworks would pose a risk to life and property.
Both the county police chief and the county fire marshal recommended that the permit not be granted, citing public safety concerns.
In view of the lack of adequate security measures and against the background of previous events related to fireworks, the district administration denied a permit under § 6C paragraph 1 letter. (c) of the Explosives Act, 1884, that the proposed display might constitute a threat to the lives and property of the public.
