Apple may plan to expand third-party artificial intelligence (AI) services with Siri. The Cupertino-based tech giant added Apple Intelligence features to the iOS 18.2 update in December 2024. It allows users to redirect Siri queries to OpenAI’s Chatgpt. Now, according to the leak, the company can also include Google’s AI model in its products, thus expanding integration.
Apple can add Google’s AI model to Apple Intelligent
MacRumors analyst Aaron Perris reveals the possibility of a partnership in posts on X (formerly known as Twitter). He shared a screenshot of the recently released iOS 18.4 Beta, highlighting that Apple may be working on integrating the Gemini AI model with the operating system.
The updated backend now shows two options under the Third Party Model section based on the screenshot. Although OpenAI has been added, Google is now also considered an option. It is worth noting that the code will not reveal any other details, such as the possible integration of the AI model, and the features that the AI model will be able to access.
If true, this leak will also confirm that Apple’s senior vice president of software engineering, Craig Federighi, hinted at a critical post-conference for the Global Developers Conference (WWDC) in 2024.
At the time, company executives stressed that Apple would continue to integrate different AI models with OpenAI’s chatbots. Federighi also named Google Gemini but added: “Nothing can be announced now, but that’s our direction.”
Despite the leak, integration of Gemini AI models is unlikely to happen anytime soon. Even though the code appears in the iOS 18.4 Beta update, it may be closer to the iPhone 17 series before the Gemini feature appears in Apple devices. Last year, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman claimed the same, highlighting that the tech giant could provide an exclusive window for Openai before it landed on other AI partners.
Currently, in addition to Siri, ChatGpt can also be accessed through Apple Intelligence’s writing tool. The compose feature also allows users to generate images using a chatbot.
