Apple is reportedly making major reforms to its virtual voice assistant Siri program that will make it more conversational. The Cupertino-based tech giant has released a new interface for voice assistants, which is expected to add additional features early next year, which will allow it to handle application-related tasks and provide a better contextual understanding of user commands. But according to the report, iPhone manufacturers now plan to take Siri to Chatgpt’s level with better natural language conversations and other features.
Apple is reportedly working to improve Siri through AI
Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman reported that despite the announced Siri upgrade making it more capable, Apple’s goal is to replace Chatgpt and Gemini by further upgrading its voice assistant. The report, which cites unnamed people familiar with the matter, claimed that the tech giant plans to use a more advanced large language model (LLMS), all developed internally to make Siri more conversational.
With this upgrade, Siri is said to be able to handle back and forth conversations and “propose more complex requests in a faster way.” Gurman claims that the new version of Siri is called LLM Siri internally. The AI-powered Siri will also be able to generate text and perform other AI chatbot functions, the report said.
Apple is said to have plans to announce the new Siri as part of the iOS 19 and MacOS 16 update, which will be in the third quarter of 2025. However, these features are reportedly not shipped until early 2026.
Interestingly, the tech giant has also released a new list of work related to reporting capabilities. Earlier this month, the company opened a senior machine learning engineer, audio generation, Siri and information intelligence location, with the job description highlighting: “You will join a team that is redefining computing to create groundbreaking conversational assistant technology for large-scale systems and new customer devices and people who build smart assistants.”
It is worth noting that currently, compatible Apple device users can expect to use a feature called Apple Intent that integrates Siri with first-party and third-party applications. It will let the virtual assistant perform application-specific tasks. Part of Apple Intelligence, the expected update will also allow Siri to borrow user data, thus becoming more context-aware and satisfying fuzzy requests made by users. This update is expected to arrive early next year.
