The iOS 18.3 iPhone update was launched by Apple on Monday. It’s much smaller than the first two numbered updates that introduced significant features, most of which are part of Apple Intelligence – the company’s suite of artificial intelligence (AI). However, this brings a key change to the notification summary, following the recent criticism faced by Apple’s intelligence-driven feature on the headlines. It also includes other tweaks related to the calculator app and Apple Intelligence’s selection system.
iOS 18.3 iPhone update: What new features are there
According to Apple’s release notes, the iOS 18.3 update is compatible with existing models that support iOS 18. One of the most famous additions to the update is the change in notification summary. The feature is now turned off by default and cannot be News and Entertainment category. Users who choose to use it can do this when they are provided again.
The feature was introduced last year in iOS 18.1, and the information obtained from notifications condenses to enable users to quickly scan through key details in summary format. However, the company recently drew Flak, most notably from the BBC, which asked Apple about false information added to the AI summary. Although Apple didn’t pull down features or released fixes at the time, the latest updates would disable it by default. There is also a warning now, which says “Maybe there is an error.”
Another change to the notification summary is its introduction. Now it will come with italic text to help users better distinguish it from other notifications, Apple said.
Apple also makes Apple Intelligence an opt-out feature. Previously opted in, if users don’t want to use Apple’s AI suite, they now have to manually opt out. This option exists in Apple Intelligence & Siri Settings Sets the pane in the app.
Visual intelligence has also been adjusted. Apple says users can now add events to their calendar from posters or flyers. In addition, it will be able to identify a wider range of animals and plants. This feature is unique to the iPhone 16 model and can be accessed through the camera control buttons.
Meanwhile, the company brings key features to calculator applications. In the case of iOS 18, Apple removed the ability to repeat the last math operation by repeatedly clicking the aliquot symbol. iOS 18.3 brings it back. With these changes, the update also provides bug fixes related to Genmoji, HealthKit, and Writing Tools.
