Agriculture Minister Kinjarapu Atchannaidu on Friday (December 5) condoled with the family members of Chilla Nagalingam, a farmer from Ellutla village in Puttaluru mandal of Anantapur district, who reportedly ended his life on December 4.
Preliminary reports indicate that Nagalingam owned approximately 83 cents of agricultural land and leased another three acres, primarily growing bananas. He also used to buy bananas from neighboring farmers and send them to Bengaluru.
Between 2021 and 2024, he allegedly suffered financial losses due to fluctuating market prices, insufficient returns and payment delays. Rising interest on loans and continued trading losses further worsened his financial situation.
Mr. Atchannaidu said whatever the reason, it is the government’s responsibility to support farmers and protect their families during crises. He said the state would provide all possible help to Nagalingam’s family.
The minister also criticized the YSRCP leaders and alleged that they tried to use the tragedy for political gain by attributing the death only to low banana prices. He condemned such actions as misleading and shameful.
