More than 2.5 lakh houses built under the Andhra Pradesh Township and Infrastructure Development Corporation (APTIDCO) and Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY) schemes were handed over to beneficiaries in 30 areas across the state on Monday.
Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu, who participated in a housewarming event at Puduru village in Naidupeta mandal of Tirupati district, said the government would build a total of 17 million houses for the poor in the state by 2029.
“During the first phase of the initiative, which was launched in November 2025, three million houses have been distributed to the beneficiaries and another 4.5 million houses will be handed over to the beneficiaries by the end of this year. The warming ceremonies will be held in June and September,” the Chief Minister said.
The coalition government completed 5.5 million houses in 21 months. In Tirupati district alone, 15,659 houses were distributed among the beneficiaries. “We are building a total of 17 million houses in the state by 2029 to provide a house to all poor homeless people.”
Mr. Naidu said that during the tenure of the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) from 2014 to 2019, about 8.19 lakh houses were constructed and handed over to the poor.
The YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) government had built only 6.5 million houses in five years, while the coalition government had built 5.5 million houses in just 21 months, he said.
Mr. Naidu inspected the G+3 residential complexes built with modern amenities like parks, hiking trails, wide roads, anganwadi centers and schools in Pudur. He participated in the warming ceremonies with the recipients.
He directed the officials to install solar panels under the PM Surya Ghar scheme and promote energy efficient facilities.
A surprising check
Mr. Naidu said that the performance of government employees in implementing social programs is being reviewed.
The chief minister has announced that he will conduct surprise checks across the state from next month. “Our aim is to ensure good governance in the state. A system has been put in place to ensure that welfare and development are done in a balanced manner with effective governance,” he said.
