Congress Working Committee member N Raghuveera Reddy on Monday demanded the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah and called for scrapping of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.
Speaking at a press conference in the city, the former minister described the exercise as non-transparent and claimed that some 13.5 million votes were deleted due to the weakening of the opposition. He called the nationwide agitation “another fight for freedom” in defense of the “one vote, one value” principle.
Mr Reddy claimed that protesters in Delhi were met with a deployment of about 40,000 police on October 9 and 10, canceling trains and suspending internet services, and said the Supreme Court had ordered the restoration of services. He also alleged that the Chandrababu Naidu-led government had arrested Congress and INDIA bloc leaders in the state.
On BC’s reservations, he asked Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu what the Telugu Desam Party, a partner in the NDA government, had done to secure the promised 34% quota in local bodies, given the 50% ceiling. He said that Rahul Gandhi had promised to raise the ceiling.
On El Nino, he urged the state government to seek central assistance and prepare for drought.
