Former Ajax forward Antony has resolved a long-standing dispute with the Dutch club after contesting fines totaling over £300,000. The fines were imposed for missing training sessions ahead of his £86 million transfer to Manchester United in the summer of 2022.
Antony’s move to United was finalized at the end of the transfer window, following persistent efforts by manager Erik ten Hag, who had previously managed the Brazilian at Ajax. However, the transfer process was marred by Antony’s absence from two matches and three training sessions, which led to the club issuing three separate fines adding up to €360,000 (£305,000), as reported by Dutch outlet AD.
Antony claimed he had received permission from then-Ajax head coach Alfred Schreuder to miss training while negotiating his transfer. When his attempts to reduce the fines were ignored, he took legal action against Ajax in January.
In February, an independent arbitration committee ruled that the fines were excessive but could not confirm if they were unlawful, as Schreuder was unavailable to testify. The parties eventually reached an out-of-court settlement, the details of which remain undisclosed.
In a statement released on March 7, Ajax said: “Ajax and Antony have reached a settlement in an arbitration case that the former Ajacied had filed against the club. Given the positive history between Ajax and the Brazilian attacker, all parties involved are pleased that the arbitration process has come to an end and that they can put this matter behind them.”
Antony is currently on loan at La Liga side Real Betis, seeking to revive his career after a challenging spell at Manchester United.
